Provision of quality health care in all health institutions by ensuring that medical practitioners and dental surgeons as well as health care facilities adhere to acceptable medical and dental standards and practices.
Guidelines for MDC Practitioners Supervising Healthcare Facilities
1. Should be a Sierra Leonean and registered by the Medical and Dental Council of Sierra Leone.
2. Annual Renewal Certificate to practice should be up-to-date.
3. Should have practiced for at least three (3) years after Permanent Registration.
4. Should be accessible within thirty minutes, travel time to health care facility.
5. Should ensure that proper standard is maintained in the health care facility.
6. Doctors supervision Clinics, should inform the Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Sierra Leone in
writing, of the particular clinic he/she will be supervising.
BRIEF BACKGROUND
The Medical and Dental Council of Sierra Leone is a statutory body established by NPRC Decree No. 12 of 1994 and subsequently incorporated into the Laws of Sierra Leone by the Repeal and Modification Act of Parliament in 1996.
The Council was given additional responsibilities by Amendment Act No. 1 of 2008.
These responsibilities include the following:
1. Registering and licensing all health care facilities in accordance with such standards as the Council may, with the approval of the
Minister, determine;
2. Monitoring and periodically inspecting all health care facilities to ensure that they adhere to established medical and dental
standards and practices; and
3. Closing down private health care facilities, which:
– are operated without being registered and licensed under section 23A; or
– do not meet the established standards of medical and dental practices.”
The Council shall, after registering a medical practitioner or dental surgeon in the appropriate register, issue to him a license to practice which shall be renewed annually.
Any medical practitioner or dental surgeon who wishes to operate a health care facility shall apply in writing to the Council for the registration and licensing of such facility”
